DrupalCamp Bangkok The Summary

Yesterday we had DrupalCamp Bangkok hosted by INET and sponsored by CodeGent, OpenDream and @jfxberns. At first this supposed to be a small event with only 30 participants; however, it was ended up at 100+ registrants again. Honestly, I don't expect to see any good sessions or great presentation in this camp because Drupal is just a new comer in Thailand. Drupal Thailand has not so many members and most of the topics in the forum are all basic questions. In fact, my hidden agenda in DrupalCampBangkok is:

  1. to promote the feature of Drupal that you have to spend a day or two to get the same thing in other CMS;
  2. to meet the demand;
  3. to meet the supply;
  4. to meet all you in person!

DrupalCampBangkok yesterday was great no doubt. It satisfied all my targets perfectly.

Since Drupal is very new in Thailand, we had a special track to introduce Drupal to everyone who wanted to know the basic of Drupal. This track was suggested by @kengggg and @jfxberns but they were so busy yesterday so it was my responsibility to give a short introduction to all you. I hoped you got something useful in my rough tutorial. Drupal looks a bit complex but it is just a trade-off of configurable flexibility. I had not enough time to prepare slides for this introduction but I still hoped you got what I said. Yesterday I showed you most of all basic knowledge to:

  1. Install Drupal 5.7
  2. Enable clean URL
  3. Configure basic settings
  4. Manage block
  5. Manipulate menu and block
  6. Install/Uninstall modules
  7. Install themes
  8. Create new content type
  9. Introduce popular modules
  10. Customize themes

I also had my own session afternoon in the title "Optimizing Drupal for Mobile Devices". I got so many interesting comments. If really want to detect browser, you should try browscap and in Drupal we have browscap module.

Yesterday I met so many great people. One thing I can tell you if you are considering to try Drupal. Drupal is not the best thing in the world but it is suitable for building any kind of sites by less effort. There are many people looking for Drupal experts to help them build sites. It is your chance!

However, in another point of view, DrupalCampBangkok yesterday was not as good as it should be. It doesn't look like the original concept of BarCamp at all because of not enough participation. It is not your fault. It is all my fault. Drupal community in Thailand is not ready for this kind of camp. I forced to make it happen too early. I am so sorry to all sponsors which may upset because of this.

I will never organize DrupalCampBangkok again until we are really ready. And I must spread the knowledge to all you better and quicker by book! Don't worry to miss this kind of camp for so long. I have planed to fill the gap in this period by:

  1. CMSCamp or FrameworkCamp
  2. WebCamp

The idea is to open the camp to wider topic. Drupallers may join these camps to promote the use of Drupal. Cool? If you like it, please help us make it happen. You are always a part of camps!

My photos are being uploaded to Flickr. Be patience.
